How Long Can Mosquito Eggs Survive?

What Central Texas Homeowners Should Know

When mosquito activity slows during cooler weather, many homeowners assume the problem is gone until spring. In reality, mosquitoes are often still present — just in a different life stage.

Mosquito Eggs Don’t Die Easily — But They Don’t Last Forever

In Central Texas, many common mosquito species (including Aedes mosquitoes) survive winter primarily as eggs, not adults. These eggs are specially adapted to withstand dry or cool conditions and can remain dormant until the environment becomes favorable again.

Under typical conditions, mosquito eggs can survive several months while waiting for warmth and moisture. Some species’ eggs are capable of lasting through an entire winter and hatching when temperatures rise and water becomes available. Once submerged in water and exposed to warm temperatures, eggs can hatch quickly — often within 24–48 hours.

You may have heard claims that mosquito eggs can survive for up to 10 years. Fortunately, scientific research does not support this as a realistic or common scenario. While eggs are resilient, long-term survival is usually limited to months, and in some cases just over a year, depending heavily on environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, and exposure.

This is good news: it means mosquito populations are manageable, especially with early, targeted prevention.

Why Winter and Early Spring Matter for Mosquito Control

Because eggs are waiting — not multiplying — cooler months provide an opportunity to reduce future mosquito pressure. Eliminating standing water, managing leaf litter, and addressing shaded, damp areas can significantly reduce the number of eggs that survive to hatch later.

Waiting until mosquitoes are flying often means reacting to a much larger population. Prevention works best before that happens.

An Eco-Friendly Approach That Targets Mosquitoes Only

At EcoPro Services, we focus on eco-friendly mosquito control that targets mosquitoes without harming beneficial insects. We utilize In2Care®, an innovative system designed to interrupt the mosquito life cycle by spreading targeted control agents directly among mosquitoes themselves.

This approach:

  • Targets mosquitoes at multiple life stages
  • Reduces the need for broad spraying
  • Is safe for pollinators, pets, and people

If you want fewer mosquitoes this season — without unnecessary chemicals — early prevention is the most effective and environmentally responsible step.
